History

Since 1976, Le Cercueil has fascinated both Brussels locals and visitors from around the world. Inspired by the cult film The Exorcist, the bar was envisioned by its first owner to offer an unusual and memorable experience, blending mystery, thrills, and conviviality.

Located just steps from the Grand-Place, the bar has retained its original charm: a wooden façade, skeletons carefully arranged in a coffin at the entrance, and a dark red corridor that immerses visitors in a gothic and intriguing atmosphere.

In 1995, Pierre Masure, a Brussels native, joined the bar as a bartender and took over its management in 2008. Since then, he has preserved Le Cercueil’s unique spirit while adding modern touches, such as a more rock-oriented music selection, creative cocktails, and beers served in skull-shaped mugs crafted by local artisans.

Over the years, Le Cercueil has become much more than a themed bar. It has become a place of memories and encounters, frequented by multiple generations of loyal clients, some visiting for over 40 years. Every detail—from the soft lighting to the coffin-shaped tables—contributes to the unforgettable experience the bar offers each visitor.

In 2026, Le Cercueil will celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking not only its longevity but also its ability to remain a unique venue, combining gothic ambiance, conviviality, and memorable events. With private spaces for parties and events, Le Cercueil continues to write its story, inviting everyone to experience an extraordinary moment in the heart of Brussels.
